The trick of turning off wireless is only needed on these old firmware levels. Once you get updated, you shouldn't need to do this.
Now that wireless is off, unplug the router, count to 30, and plug it back in. If everything goes properly, you should start downloading the update in 5 minutes or so.
If this doesn't work, you may need to manually update the firmware. I needed to do this myself when I first got the WRTP54G. For some reason the automatic update didn't work with the original firmware. Read this thread for more info:

The thread has a link to the 1.00.55 firmware, which is only one version back from the current one. Once you have the 55 firmware, the router should automatically grab the 1.00.58 version.
