Vonage The side that hears the echo is not the side that causes the echo. If you are hearing

The side that hears the echo is not the side that causes the echo. If you are hearing your voice echo back, then the cause of the echo is at the remote side (the side of the person you are talking to). Echo is the analog "leak" of your own voice onto the receive patch back to you.

Here's how it works: on a normal call, your voice is transmitted to the other party and their voice is transmitted back to you on two seperate paths.

Tx -> Rx
Party A Party B
Rx <- Tx

If the transmit (Tx) path bleeds into the receive (Rx) path, you get an echo:

Tx -> Rx
Party A ), where the signal jumps between the Tx and Rx parths.

The echo source is at the other side of the one that hears it. Basicly, any echo caused by the Vonage side would only be noticable to the remote party. Echo is only caused in analog parts of the phone call, digital signals can not cause echo. Here's how a Vonage call works:

Telephone (echo causer for remote party)
->
Wiring (echo causer for remote party)
->
Vonage adapter (echo causer for remote party)
->
Internet (digital - no echo)
->
Vonage's IP to PSTN gateway (digital - no echo)
->
PSTN network (part analog - echo causer)
->
Remote party wiring (echo causer)
->
Remote party telephone (echo causer)

PSTN = public switched telephone network
IP = internet protocol

Vonage's PSTN gateway converts the IP phone call into an ISDN (integrated services digital network) phone call. So the Vonage call even enters the PSTN digitally.

With Vonage, the Vonage side is only analog up to where your phone connects to the Vonage device: your phone, phone wiring, and the analog-to-digital circuity. An echo created here would not be audible to you (the Vonage side) because there would be almost (or no) delay, making it not noticable. The echo needs to be more than about 25ms for it to be noticable. Most phones actually do echo your own voice back to you but its instantaneous that you don't notice. In fact, you're probablly so used to it that you would only notice the echo wasn't there.

Most echo is caused by the telephone set you (or the remote party) is using. Specificlly, the microphone picking up what is coming out of the earpiece. Simply turning the volume down will eliminate or reduce most (if not all echo). After that, there may be a physical problem with wiring or equipment (a short or some other defect) from the phone up to and including the PSTN phone network.
