The router or VoIP must be marked for use with Vonage on the box, or it will never work with Vonage. The same manufacturer (example Linksys) may have a vonage marked VoIP and an unlocked, or other version VoIPs with the same name, so be sure you purchase the correct one. I found this out the hard way, having first purchased a replacement unlocked version Linksys PAP2 that would not work with Vonage.
Vonage.com online has a list of several different phone adapters from different manufacturers that will work under Equipment in help. The Vonage.com site also has a big rebate going on it's v-portal router for new customers. If you live in the States, you can get a "Vonage" marked version VoIP in many retail stores.
I have used Vonage since 2005, some overseas and some in the states with the same virtual number. Family and friends can call without paying for an overseas or long distance call, and usually have good reception. The only problems I have had has been when the actual DSL or cable connection was slow due to heavy traffic. Or from equipment failure when overseas with no backup Vonage VoIP on hand.
