Vonage The promise of VOIP, one piece of the concept of all communication / information

The promise of Voip, one piece of the concept of all communication / information services coming into the home on one system, and maybe even by one provider. (Television / Internet / Phone etc.) The concept still has a ways to go but it is getting there.

I have had Voip for over 4 years, originally with another company, the technology was in it's infancy then, it was computer software and a computer card with the phone hooked into the computer card. The sound quality was not that good, and there was a lot of echo on some international calls. I think that the Voip protocol has been changed since then and the voice enhancing and noise suppressing technology has been improved. Back then it was more or less a call out only system, and the incoming calls could be handled if the caller had a similar system as you.

That system would work fine if everyone had this same technology, but the POTS system is so prevalent that it was necessary to make the Voip system work with the POTS system and all the issues that this backward compatibility requirement entails. But this is just a transitionary phase, otherwise it would have been easier to bypass the POTS system and leapfrog to a clearly better and more advanced technology. Your unique identification number lies as much or more with the system that you hook up in the home as it does with the service provider. With the POTS system the phone company has control of this, and this is the cause of a lot of the problems with having to blend both systems, to work with POTS phone numbers. Once the POTS system is completely gone, like LP records when CDs took over, there will be a lot less problems with this technology.

I have just changed over to Vonage a couple of weeks ago, the voice is very clear compared to before, it is probably even clearer than the POTS phone system. There have been a few wrinkles here and there, and there will probably be a few more as with any growing technology. I have a local Voip Area Code but not a local Exchange Number, so local incoming calls are long distance to the local callers. The only way around this is to get a local Exchange Number, and the easiest way to do this is probably transfer my current POTS number. I'm not sure if this is doable in my area yet, but until it is I will have to maintain a POTS telephone service. My original intent with going to Vonage was to replace my current POTS system entirely. This will be an eventuality but right now I don't know when that it will be possible.
