The problem you're having is rather strange, and I would try to get more information on it before making a decision. I'd disable the network outage number in your account home page and see if the problem keeps occurring. If it does, a call to customer support is in order. If the problem stops, you may actually be having network down time at home, causing the automatic forwarding to cut in as it should.
As far as hooking the VT1005 in ahead of your router, that might help depending on the quality of your router. If it's a good one, then I doubt that it's causing the problem. Likewise, if you are a heavy internet user with a lot of big data transfers, having the VT1005 in front of your router might cause problems if it has trouble handling the load. If, on the other hand, your router is flaky, putting the VT1005 up front could help.
