The location:
Guttenburg, NJ (just across the river from NYC)

The computer:
Dell Dimension 4100, Pentium III processor, 384 MB ram, Windows ME

The modem:
Toshiba PCX 2500 cable modem (supplied by Time Warner/Roadrunner)

The thingy (router? voip?):
Linksys RTP300 (supplied by Vonage)

The configuration:

Time Warner Roadrunner cable comes out of the wall and into the Toshiba PCX 2500 cable modem.
Blue ethernet cable comes out of Toshiba PCX 2500 cable modem and into the blue ethernet port on the back of the Linksys RTP300 (labled Internet)
Yellow ethernet cable comes out of the yellow Ethernet port #1 on the back of the Linksys RTP 300 and into a Linksys Compact USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter.
Linksys Compact USB 2.0 10/100 Network Adapter goes into the USB port on the back of the computer.
Phone jack goes from green Phone 1 port on back of LInksys RTP300 to a telephone.

Additional information:

there was NO software shipped with the Linksys RTP300 device (which came new, from Vonage)

The problem:

Unable to access the internet, although the phone seems to work...

Attempted solutions:

Many (many) hours on hold and on the phone with customer service reps.(no joke, no rant, over 8 hours of my life so far have been spent just on the phone with these people, including more hours reading the manuals, setting things up and continually rebooting everything) At first they had me run winipcfg, however there was no Fast Ethernet option in the drop down menu, so nothing could be done from that screen.
Next they had me go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>Network and had me choose the TCP/IP -> Linksys USB 2.0 10/100 adapter and had me alter many of the settings in there (DNS Configuration, Gateway, and IP Address) After all of the changes were made to the TCP/IP settings, after all of the reboots and waiting and following instructions, we still did not have internet access.
It was at this point that I was mysteriously disconnected from customer service, leaving me with the option of starting all over again or blowing my brains out.

As a last resort I thought I would try these forums to see if anybody here could lend me a hand. If not then I guess I'll just have to cancle Vonage and go back to the ol' tin can and string system we had before.

Thank you for your time and energy
twj
