The home is likely pre-wired for a security system, and that's why there are two CAT5 wires hanging on the outside. That's exactly how my home was wired when it was built. If that's the case then there is nothing you have to do with those wires unless you're planning on using Vonage with your home's monitored security system. In my home the wires were hanging from the outside, and were coming from a box in the garage where all of the house's cable and telephone wires started. I just opened up the box, and pulled those wires inside the box so that they wouldn't just be hanging outside. If I ever did get a land line (gosh forbid) all the telephone tech would have to do is push those wires back through.

Since phone lines and CAT5 are a parallel circuits you don't have to do any special wiring. Just plug your Vonage router's phone adapter into one of the home's phone jacks, and the signal should go to every jack in the house.

Just in case this helps... when I setup Vonage in my house I did run into a few problems because no phone company had ever come to set up the home's wiring since I was starting off my newly built home fresh with Vonage. I had to add a phone jack into the computer room, which can be a messy job having to climb in the attack splicing into the CAT5 cable. it was also hard to tell which was cable for the telephone system and which was for the alarm since all of the cable was CAT5 and the same color. Of course I ended up splicing into the wrong one, but that was easily fixed. I would suggest keeping a cordless phone up in the attic with you while you're working so you can test the jacks without having to run back downstairs constantly. Another issue I ran into while wiring was the builder wired all of the phone jacks in the house wrong. They just randomly hooked up the wires to the jacks, so if you find one (or all in my case) aren't working even after you have wired everything that could be the cause. Just unscrew the face plates and make sure all of the colored wires match up properly.

Anyway, I hope that helps. If I had known all those things when I wired my home I would have been able to do it in half the time. I've now had Vonage setup as my family's sole phone service since November 2004, and it continues to work great.

Take care! :-D
