Vonage The beeps are partially a function of the phone as well. If you're using a cheap

The beeps are partially a function of the phone as well. If you're using a cheap phone - ditch it. Get a quality phone, whether it be cordless or hardwired (or both).. I have the Uniden TRU8xxx series phones and love them, and also have a bunch of Nortel/Aastra phones as well. The Unidens are about as good as it gets for cordless, the Nortel/Aastra phones have amazing sound quality. I can't think of the last time I've heard a spurrious DTMF tone with these.

Without getting into a heavy discussion of telephone technology, you'll notice that your telephone wire only has 2 wires in it... but this presents a problem, as you're trying to carry 1) power, 2) sound to your phone, 3) sound away from your phone. Usually each one of these would require 2 wires, thus 6 wires for a phone. Back when all phone lines came from the phone company, running 6 copper wires for every customer vs. 2 wires is an expensive proposition, so they worked to reduce the # of wires per customer. Combining power and one of the audio paths isn't that difficult, but that still leaves us with 4. (If you think about it, the speakers on your stereo/computer/etc always have two wires, positive & negative. The same applies to microphones) The trick is in combining the 4-wire audio down to 2 wire. Oversimplifying things, if you were to connect your sound source (say, a microphone) to your output, you get feedback, which isn't something anyone wants to hear. So, the telephone companies have devices called hybrids, which convert between the 4-wire & 2-wire systems. Your telephone also has simpler circuitry which performs the same task of splitting the audio to the earpiece & microphone. Your Vonage adapter also has a hybrid in it, which combines & splits the audio from the digital decoder, your telephone, and the digital encoder.

The Vonage adapter DOES play a role in this, and we've seen how much of a difference the hardware makes, especially if you look at the older firmware versions for the RTP300 which were echo-prone, but this has been fixed for awhile. So, your telephone DOES play a role in the call quality.

For those even remotely interested in this, I'd highly suggest reading Steve Church's telephone guide over at:

While the document is written for broadcast engineers, I think most people could read through it and still learn quite a bit from it. The document gets into all of the nitty gritty about the phone system, "standards" (mainly lack thereof), signalling, PBXs, etc. Voip isn't specifically mentioned in there, but most of this still applies to Voip, especially when using regular telephones or calling POTS lines with Voip.

The digital phone will not help your situation. The beeps are from your vonage
