The Voip market, at least Vonage's little slice of Voip heaven, is kinda like the cell phone market. Most providers will give you a device for free, or for a low cost, but they are paying for that device and (frankly) they don't want to see you walk off their contract and use their hardware on a competitor's network.
I can't take my perfectly good Nokia GSM cell phone from the old AT&T Wireless and use it on my GSM Cingular "Go!" Phone. I can throw it away or use it as a paperweight, or find aftermarket ways to unlock it. But any other cell company I might choose won't want to deal with the device. It's cheaper and easier for them to give me a new phone.
Since Vonage was the "market starter", they (IMHO wisely) chose to lock their devices down. Otherwise, they'd have competitors crawling out of the woodwork encouraging you to pay the $40 disconnect fee and go to their service, with hardware that Vonage paid for...
