The MAC address must be from that of a Vonage branded unit. Linksys also puts out similar devices that are sold as open units that can be used with providers that allow you to bring your own equipment or you can use them with IP PBX's.

Since Vonage does not allow for this, the device you have has to be in Vonage's device inventory. These devices are valid and have the proper configuration to communicate with Vonage tftp servers in order to download a profile. Now there are cases where some of the MAC addressed were not uploaded into device inventory because Linksys never sent them the file. In this case, the device could be valid and it would take a few days for Vonage to get the information from Linksys and add it to device inventory. You would just need to supply Vonage with the MAC, serial number, and model of device.

For your security question, that is all up to you. You have to configure the wireless security yourself. The wireless router can do WPA or WEP. So you have to choose which you want to use and configure it. Then you would need to configure the wireless adapter in your laptop with the same security in order for it to communicate. WPA and WPA2 would be a better more secure choice over WEP however, they will all give you the security to keep people from just jumping on.

Not having wireless security is very bad. It will allow anyone who is looking to leech off of your connection to do so which could cause quality issues for Vonage. It also becomes a security risk for your internal PC's data. They could also download copyrighted material using your IP address which can get you into hot water with the MPAA and the RIAA. Even people not looking to be malicious could accidentally connect to you and be using your connection without them even knowing it.
