That's good to know that you can fax from some basic Vonage lines.

I'm getting rid of the fax machine for many other reasons as well, though.

Frankly, the SPAM FAX has gotten out of control. Congress is considering a bill to legalize SPAM FAX, forcing us to "opt out" of SPAM FAX if we don't want it.

"Opt out" is like saying "please stop hitting me" instead of making illegal to hit people.

(The marketers always seem to be able to drag some shill before Congressional hearings who will say they LOVE telemarketer calls, SPAM FAX, or whatever, so that opt out should be allowed. Get real!).

I have even sued people in the past under the existing law, for sending SPAM FAXES. One enterprising fellow tried to send me a number of 13-page faxes advertising - of all things - Fax paper. He listed all his papers and prices - over 13 pages!

After running my machine dry, he wanted to sell me more paper! I thought this was particularly egregious. I wrote him a nice letter, which he ignored. The second time, I called him, and he told me to "F off" and hung up. So the third time I sued. He ended up paying me $1000 the day of the trial to settle the case. He still does it, too.

Unfortunately, the SPAM FAXERs just move offshore. I am not sure who buys into these "free vacation" faxes or "hot stock tips" but apparently enough do - enough to make it profitable to broadcast fax.

So, faxing is being killed off by SPAM FAXES as much as by e-mail. Very few of my clients even use Faxes anymore.

MAXEMAIL has worked well so far for $14.99 per YEAR. I have a dedicated fax number, and the faxes are all turned to .pdf files and stored on their website and/or e-mailed to me. I can save them on my hard drive (paperless office!).

I have not tried SENDING faxes through MAXEMAIL just yet. That might be a little tricker. I think I have to create the .pdf file and then send it to MAXEMAIL and then they fax it. So I'll finally have to break down and buy a real copy of acrobat.

So, to me, the issue of "fax line" is not that important. There are alternatives to having a dedicated fax line (much cheaper alternatives) and when you figure in the cost of a fax machine, paper and toner, the "virtual fax" is almost free in comparison.

ONE WORD OF CAUTION though. There are other "virtual fax" companies out there that have really, really bad reputations! They advertise like mad, as they have to keep getting new victims (er, customers) as the old ones leave. Some of these places charge $25 a MONTH for this service, which is outrageous compared to $14.99 per YEAR.

They also debit your credit card (a la AOL) and when you cancel, they claim never to get your cancellation order and keep charging you. Bad, Bad Internet company!

They also have a nebulous usage policy. If you send or receive more faxes "than average" you are charged like 25 cents a page. Apparently they give out your fax number to FAX SPAMMERS and then bill you for the privilege of receiving the "FREE DISNEY CRUISE!" fax. And what they consider "average" in their TOS is an imaginary number (-1^1/2)

So avoid those folks. MAXEMAIL rocks. There is a whole website and forum devoted to comparing different virtual fax providers. Do a google search for more info.

Good Luck!

P.S. - called the telco today to find out why my phone # has NOT been switched to Vonage. They say they can't do anything about it. Dragging their feet, I think! May they rot in heck.

Yeah, I can see that now as you've pointed it out. Still a bit vague if you ask me.
You don't necessarily need to have a dedicated fax line to send faxes but some fax
