That's actually what I meant- with Vonage you've always been able to pick the AC and city, but not the number (or even the prefix), as far as I know. I was wondering if that had changed recently.
At the competitor's site, you select state and area code. Then they display a list of cities and available prefixes within those cities. For example, within the 212 area code, you can select
NYC 372-xxxx
NYC 699-xxxx
NYC 731-xxxx
Once you select the prefix, then they display a list of all numbers "available" for that prefix. Bottom line is, you do get to select your actual phone number. Pretty cool.
To be clear, it would have been a no-brainer decision to stick with Vonage, had it not been for their recent outages AND their new policy of jamming you with a disconnection fee if you cancel service within the first 2 years. One year, maybe. But 2 years? They're crazy. The competitor doesn't charge any disconnect fee as long as you return the adapter. (the way Vonage used to be in the good old days, before it got too "corporate" for its own good)
