I've connected the Vonage device to the internal 56k modem, making no changes to the modem setup. It is using the same settings as when I was making calls over a landline. I've made a couple calls from and a couple calls to the system. All the calls seemed very clear from both sides. My wife was the caller and the receiver using the Vonage phone, while I was at the other end on the cell phone.
I realize this hardly proves that "it works". Is there a utility that will measure the error rate? Or will it become clear, over time, whether calls are suffering from excessive errors?
BTW, I don't plan to use the Fax capability at all. My primary purpose for using the dialup modem is to experiment with enhanced reporting capabilities that the Vonage software does not offer, but that may be available using a software application that can deal with the dialup modem. (Will Vonage ever provide an API to their device, or even to their log file?)
For example, I'd like to popup the caller ID information on the PC. And when no caller ID is available, but the caller's number is listed in my phonebook, I'd like to substitue my phone book info for the missing caller ID. I'd like to insert my own software answering machine into the process, so that the when the caller start his voicemail with, like, "hey, it's Joe, pickup if you can", I'll be able to hear that real time and pick up the call. And I have a couple other ideas that are probably silly and that I'm a bit embarrassed to reveal to the general public :oops:
I don't know for certain that any of these features will become available using the dialup modem, even if the setup is "working" in other respects. If the dialup modem setup does not provide high quality voice transmission, then it doesn't matter whether these other features work or not.
