After I saw that the pre-N router was the problem, I found hundreds of threads all over the web reporting the same problem. Shutting down the firewall and rebooting did the trick alright. Great sound quality now. I guess I could also get another cheap router to connect to the VTA in front of the belkin pre-n and leave the firewall up.

Belkin advertises this router as great for Voip, but then can't make it work without knocking out the firewall.
