Thank you for posting this MikeH. I wanted to post something to refute some of the misinformation in the comments but having someone post how their personal use contradicts those statements is much better.

The original post (lifted from an article) has some flaws as well, but they are not significant to the main point the author is trying to make.

Vonage's profitability is at risk from several different factors any of which could result in failure.

Lets look at some of the original authors mistakes;

The author compares Vonage to a long distance company rather than a cell phone company (the latter with lower churn rates) because cell phone companies are able to lock in customers with equipment subsidies. Well, guess what, Vonage has a termination fee to cover equipment subsidies as well.

Vonage does have a longer trial period than mobile companies offer, but this is offset by the difficulty porting numbers. People who try to port a number when they sign up may fear cancelling the port before it completes, and people who had trouble porting numbers in may think twice about trying to port a number out.

Customer Acquisition Costs
Vonage has stated that they will be lowering advertising and thus lowering customer acquisition costs. This, the author claims, will be counter productive since Vonage has already tapped all the low hanging fruit and now will need to spend more to acquire the same amount of customers.

While the logic sounds good it neglects that Vonage's past advertising was way over the top. How many impressions does it really take to get someone to sign up for service. Vonage's initial advertising blitz established Vonage as a reliable large corporate entity, now it needs to focus on a message that is more concrete and start targeting specific customers. Some of this move was already seen in the shift away from the generic WooHoo advertising. But the real change can be seen in the latest advertising that provides actual cost comparisons against traditional phone companies.

Price Pressure
A recurring theme is that Vonage is going to be killed by competitors dropping prices. I have rejected this many times previously as not a short term concern, and for the last two quarters prices have remained stable. This is especially true in that it is not a simple matter to switch phone companies at this point. There is equipment to buy and a number port to deal with. When the FCC steps in to make Voip number porting as easy as wireless, and when competitors figure out how to remotely "unlock" Vonage devices we could see increased price competition. Alternatively a concerted effort to drive Vonage out of business by the cable operators could succeed, but that would be bad business.

Equipment Costs
Vonage needs to straighten out their policies for dealing with used equipment. If customers can get equipment from eBay the cost to Vonage is nearly nothing. Vonage could implement a transfer fee to allow resold equipment to be activated. Or, more beneficially, it could waive the transfer fee in return for a termination fee (see churn).

Other influences
One of the biggest steps Vonage can take to battle some of the above criticisms is to provide installation services. It will reduce churn because the systems (and home networks) will be configured correctly from the get go. It will shift advertising expenses in the local markets to installers who will be able to target it towards potential customers (local areas with broadband for example). And it will open the product up to people who would not consider doing anything related to home networking. It will provide a competitive advantage over companies offering lower priced systems and will correct one of the major deficiencies in their competition with cable companies. There is still low hanging fruit out there, this is how to pick it.
