Vonage Technically - v-phone and softphone are pretty much the same. Marketing is different.
Technically - v-phone and softphone are pretty much the same. Marketing is different. Softphone accounts are ONLY sold as add-ons. As such, you get the information that you need to use "any" SIP compatible device, including the Vonage version of PC soft phone or any other PC soft phone client that you choose (plus a wide variety of desk phones, wifi phones, and terminal adapters).
On the other hand, with V-Phone, Vonage sends that information to the "stick" directly and you can just use it, you can't find the details. If you want to use a V-Phone on your current account, you can buy one in a store and add it to your account. From the dashboard, you can then MOVE your existing account between the V-Phone and the adapter that you currently have. You cannot have both active at the same time (which means that you can't call home - if that is something that you might want to do).
If one at a time, with a log on to the web site is OK for you, then V-Phone would work. If you want to be able to have both active at once, then you can go with the softphone or - if you are just looking for very light usage - you can pick one of the free/semi-free (charge per minute) services and use that on a "generic" soft phone.

I got Vonage yesterday and was hoping that I can make and receive phone
• I would go with the V-phone since you want to use the same number and just switch
• I ended up buying magicjack (http://www.magicjack.com) for softphone purpose.
• Magic jack looks good, but I don't want to haul a phone around with me.
• Is there any serious advantages of having Vonage Softphone vs. a CounterPath
• They have the X-lite version as a free download.
