Vonage Steve's got it. The issue with trying to do the instructions in any level of exacting

Steve's got it. The issue with trying to do the instructions in any level of exacting detail is the sheer number of router models out there, so I stuck with simple diagrams and bullets.

However, the basics are to turn the DHCP server *OFF* on the router that is to be the "shared LAN" unit. Basically, you want to use the switch on the router as a switch, but not as an actual router. If your MAIN router provides the IP addresses, then it will also serve as the gateway to the Internet for all of the clients on that switch.

This also includes the WAN port of the router itself, which is why you want the cable running from one of the LAN ports on the Vonage router to the WAN port on the Vonage router - that's what allows the Vonage router to be a client of your MAIN router.

So:

1. Log into the Vonage router and pretty much turn off anything. Leave the DHCP *client* on, but don't allow it to be a DHCP *server*. QoS and other features are superfluous, turn them off. Turn remote configuration on (if you ever want to administer the Vonage router) only because you will not be able to administer the Vonage router from any of the LAN ports - the Vonage LAN ports will be part of the MAIN network now.

2. Run a cable from a LAN port on MAIN router to a LAN port on the Vonage router. Run another cable from a LAN port on the Vonage router (or, if you prefer, a LAN port on the MAIN router, doesn't matter) to the WAN port of the Vonage router.

3. Bask in the glory of the goodness that is saving a few bucks on a cheap switch. (grin)

Or, just go out and buy a cheap switch. Like I never did - I ran the "Shared LAN" configuration for quite some time - over a year, and other than spotty access to the Vonage administration screen, it worked fantastically well.
