Steve is right on the money with this.
The service itself I think is fairly stable, especially for the price. The problem in my opinion is that outside of Internet service quality, the random things that can happen are at times very difficult to troubleshoot. For the average person who is not technically savvy, doing the things many of us take as common-place seem silly.
For example:
Why should I ever have to reboot my phone adapter?
Why should I ever have to walk through this very particular set of steps to make something work? (Plug this in, plug that in, power on #1, then #2, etc.)
Why do things just randomly reset themselves? (like the volume on your device, or the caller id)
I think it is these things that get people all confused and I don't blame them. Do we worry about the software in a car not working, or do we expect to reset the power in order to start the car after it has been running for several days?
As far as customer service is concerned I ordered a second line at the end of 2005 when they were waiving activation fees. The call I made to support was very frustrating and all I was looking for was a credit for the activation fee that they were supposed to waive in the first place. Now I did get it resolved, but it was an hour plus process. that took place over several days including numerous calls and emails. For any other utility or service I would have expected it to be fixed in 10 minutes or less.
