Tried setting the static address, etc., as suggested. Still- no connectivity.
I've determined that the network adapter card is not enabled. I think the card is the cnetPRO200WL I mentioned earlier.
It is listed in "change/remove programs". Also, as mentioned earlier, the Motorola SB5101 modem appears in the "connect using" box where the PRO200WL formerly was listed. Don't know how to enable it if this is the solution to the problem. Have used the blue ethernet cable for the internet connection and the yellow one for the connection between the VT and the computer. Never interchanged.
