Vonage Speaking from my experience with the WRTP54G: 1. The WRTP54G is a most excellent

Speaking from my experience with the WRTP54G:

1. The WRTP54G is a most excellent Vonage device.
2. The WRTP54G is an adequate router, but its QoS is unable to determine upstream bandwidth and therefore is unable to prioritize packets properly.

(QoS Tutorial I wrote up: http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html )

After dealing with this frustration, in addition to an unfortunate Linksys default that makes the router inadequate for my needs (and cannot be changed), I finally went out and bought a WRT54G V4 (now known as the "WRT54GL") and loaded HyperWRT Tofu (a free aftermarket firmware which is both cheaper and faster than Sveasoft's commercial product).

Once I made this replacement, I noticed immediate improvements in my network speeds, my DNS lookup reliability, and the sound quality (inbound and outbound) on my Vonage line, mostly due to the fact that the WRTP54G could focus its energies entirely on Vonage, and not deal with "network stuff" any more.

If you want working QoS, and a better Vonage experience, I highly recommend this solution. The WRT54GL will set you back around $60, the firmware is free, and setup and tuning will probably take you a few hours.

I have my home network wired like diagram 1 in the following tutorial:

http://vonage.nmhoy.net/tworouters.html

So, here's what you should do, in my opinion...

1. Buy a WRT54GL, or a WRT54GS.
2. Go to www.hyperwrt.org and do some reading up on "Tofu 12" (for the GL) or "Thibor" (for the GS). The only known problem with Tofu 12 (and it is intermittent) is trouble forwarding ports. Tofu 11 is an alternative that no one has reported this problem with. Either way, both are better than the stock Linksys firmware and can run circles around the WRTP54G.
3. Load your preferred firmware onto the WRT54GL/S.
4. Configure your network as shown in Diagram 1 of the "two routers" tutorial above.
5. Follow the "QoS" tutorial above to implement working QoS on the router and test it.
6. Enjoy.

I have 256K capped upload, and run 2 simultaneous VPN connections and 2 simultaneous uncapped BitTorrent clients continuously, plus my Vonage line. Now that I have tuned and working QoS, reports from the "other end" of every phone conversation are that my calls are crisp and clear, with zero artifacts, no drops, etc.

The WRTP54G does just fine behind another router. No need to forward ports, or put it in the DMZ, or anything special. It's taken two firmware releases without problems since I made this change, and it's never had problems connecting to Vonage.

This is on a very old DOCSIS 1.0 modem, despite Vonage's strong recommendation that I use a DOCSIS 2.0 (my ISP uses an odd brand of network gear and they cannot do firmware upgrades on third party modems, and they are about to be bought out by Comcast so I can't justify buying one of their proprietary DOCSIS 2.0 modems).

Yes, I'm telling you to spend $60 on a router. I know this is not good news. Sorry about that, but I can assure you it is money WELL spent. Take some of the money you're saving on Vonage and invest it in making your Vonage line (and your Internet connection in general) work better. Believe me, I went through what you are going through. I spent a month trying to fix things with the WRTP54G.
