So the current director of the FCC is going to hold back Voip. Uh, I think the horse left the barn a long time ago. When you look at the current FCC stance on Voip it is clear to me where the problem lies. In case you are curious I will provide a link to the FCC 911 statement:

So either the FCC is being influenced by the large POTS companies who have everything to lose or they have their head in the sand. Has the FCC solved the problem of E911 with cell phone service? The best they can do is get your location down to which cell tower and maybe within a mile of your location. I haven't seen cell service die. And, there are several devices on the market that allow you to tie your cell phone into your home phone wiring. You can buy them at big box electronics stores. So we now know the FCC can be influenced, but we already knew that about any of the governmental agencies. I seriously doubt they will get this horse back into the barn.

As for Vonage being bought out, I think that is probably a good bet based on the customer base. Time has proven that many companies are bought for their customer base or name rather than their equity. Why did BP buy Amoco? They promised the Amoco shareholders the Amoco name would stay in the United States (I'm a shareholder). So where did Amoco go other than a small sticker on the gas pumps? It would not surprise me to see an offer and if BellSouth doesn't step in before Sprint then that would shock me. Once they have the customer base then you will see changes. I just hope that doesn't include price.

I can already hear the reply, "but Vonage doesn't have feature A or feature B." The numbers are there and they have other advantages that are missing in some other companies, such as the toll free number and the simplification of installation. Why do you think they lock you out of all those settings? Sure, it makes those who know the technology upset because they can't tweak as much. But, it keeps those who do not know what they are doing from causing problems.

Solvency is another issue with the other companies. If I were BellSouth I would see Verizon with VoiceWing, SBC with AT&T Callvantage, and Sprint's statements about moving into the Voip market. That would influence my decisions.

Finally, let's move back to the FCC one more time. Just what do they propose as the future of communications? (The FCC has really not impressed me over the last decade. They are more reactive than proactive.) DSL is a bandaid to bandwidth death on the old twin copper wires. And what does that get you? The consumer will continue to grow the technology even if slowed by the FCC with the big POTS companies lining their pockets. But eventually the monster will be too big to tie down. Most people who are disappointed with Vonage are not abandoning Voip. They are just seeing if they can solve their situation with another company.

Right now, I'll stick with Vonage and see what happens. I bought the PAP2, used the standard Linksys wireless router with the cable modem provided by Time Warner. I have done zero tinkering and I have had zero problems with sound quality better than POTS. And I cut my bill by $100 per month. But, alas, all that savings so far has gone to gasoline (and I don't have that much stock in BP).
