If you do a search on the forums, you will find a split b/w those who are heavy bandwidth users and those who are light bandwidth users. For those who are heavy bandwidth users like P2P and BitTorrent etc, they all claim that the router portions of the vonage devices are insufficient for their needs. So they believe and through actual trial and error have found that using 3rd part routers with aftermarket firmware seems to provide a stable environment for them to use vonage and run other software. So for heavy bandwidth users they prefer modem -> third party router -> vonage device.
For light bandwidth users, I have heard nothing bad about the standard modem -> vonage device -> third part router.
I for one used this light bandwidth approach for many years without significant issue.
So if you want "expert" advice, i.e. those who are heavy bandwidth users will tell you to put the third party router in front of the vonage device. But the final answer depends on how much bandwidth you actually use.
