Since no one charmed in, I decided to test both devices for myself. The HBB1 works, but the WRTSL54GS is much better once upgraded to HyperWRT Thibor firmware.
I did extensive testing durning different parts of the day and while the HBB1 improves the packet loss, eliminates it often, the WRTSL54GS setup that NateHoy descibes, along with the QoS settings tweeked provided much better results, and callers I spoke with could cleary hear the difference.
New setup: Terayon TJ715X Cable Modem -> WRTSL54GS w/ HyperWRT Thibor -> WRTP54G, all options/features turned off for the most part.
Not to mention I now have a network HD hanging off the WRTSL54GS which is a great place to backup too. For $100 the WRTSL54GS is one of the best routers I've used.
I was going to exchange the WRTP54G for the D-link ATA (since I don't need 2 wireless routers) but the hassle Vonage wants to put me though is not worth it for $50, more like $30-$35 after I pay shipping on the return and the new device.
I suppose I could have saved/posted my actual test data/results but I was too lazy. But for me the WRTSL54GS beats the HBB1. Thanks to NateHoy for taking the time to write the articles describing the setup.

• Definitely appeciate the test results! I'm very fond of the little WRT54GS routers.
• It's no surprise that hyperWRT would have better QOS, however I would like to see
