Simple, I don't want my Voip service to go down should my firewall fail or I'm doing an upgrade to it. Even if you use a redundant firewall/gateway solution with CARP/HSRP/VRRP you will still lose Voip service momentarily during the failover process while packets are going through a different path. You will also lose it again when the master comes back up while packets are going through the master's path. Also, if you use a PC based firewall using an open source OS you are likely to experience either a power supply or hard drive failure. I have experienced both. The only way to get around this is to have the Internet port of the Vonage device on the same L2 network as the cable modem and obtain an IP address from your ISP. You then only have two points of failure notwithstanding power; the Vonage Voip gateway and your ISP.
I don't know about that. I was at my regular employer's until 3am dealing with an Nachi infestation a few years ago that brought our Cisco 7513s down to their knees. (Yes, I am a network engineer by trade; have been since 1989). If there was a QoS solution in place at the time it probably wouldn't have bit us so hard. Then again my regular employer is a government agency where management and administration checks their common sense at the door.
Cox has been smurf attacked as well. The broadcast traffic filled my ipfw log. My objective of utilizing such a QoS mechanism in place is for security and future expansion concerns where I may be implementing GRE tunneling to remote locations. They finally disabled IP directed broadcast traffic after I told them several times to do that.
I am well aware of that. Why do you think I run pf/ALTQ on my FreeBSD firewall instead of ipfw which is the default firewall solution for that OS? Switching from ipfw to pf/ALTQ is not a small casual undertaking of just flipping a switch during sysinstall.
Define significant traffic. A T-1 is use to be a big deal, now any broadband provider can provide that without much effort. The objective of my posting is to do my due diligence on what I can and cannot do with a Vonage supported Voip gateway in my home office network to implement the most effective solution for me. I always ask this question when implementing something or working on a project, "What's the worst than can happen and what can I do to fix it now?" The goal of this thread is so I have the information so I can fix it now.
