Several things come to mind:

1. When you power down a cable modem, it needs to stay down for at least a minute, preferably more, so the Cable provider can "forget" your old MAC address. Sometimes, a cable modem will come back up and look like it is working, then a little later the unit goes to refresh with the Cable network, and discovers that you are running a different client MAC than it expected, and shuts you down. Some cable companies require that you call them or do something special to change MAC addresses, but this is extremely rare nowadays. You can solve this for sure by cloning your MAC address from whatever works best to your Netgear Rangemax router, or whatever router is out front. Or just make sure that cable modem has a lot of quiet time between device changes. Unplug everything and go for a nice, quiet walk for a half hour.

2. If you use any sort of P2P sharing, like BitTorrent or something, the number of connections it makes can rapidly overwhelm many routers, including the Vonage-supplied ones. The connections table fills up, and once it's full the router can't track any more connections. If you use P2P, try discontinuing its use for a while. If that helps, and you want to continue using it, buy a decent router - make sure you research one that supports the load that P2P puts on it.

2a. If you run your wireless access point in "open" (unsecured) or WEP mode, don't be too terribly surprised if P2P (or worse) is in use on your network, just not by you. WPA or WPA2 is the only way to go on wireless, and you want a fairly long and complex password.

3. Multiple chained routers is just fine. It's not ideal, but it does work. Provided, as Steve mentions above, that no two routers in the chain attempt to use the same IP address range. That's a recipe for routing disaster. And it is theoretically possible (albeit unlikely) that it would work for a while then fail.

Also, to make sure this is not a Vonage-related issue, keep your Vonage device unplugged for a while and just test out your network: Modem -> Netgear -> One Computer. Do some speed tests, anything that'll use a good bit of bandwidth, etc. If that works for an hour, add things one at a time until (or if) it fails.

Sorry about that Tony. I somehow missed that in your post about reconfiguring
You can use two routers, with the WAN port of the second plugged into a LAN port on
