Several possibilities:

I know this is stupid, but bear with me on it, OK?: Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE that there is no telco connection of any kind on your line (as in, there was a wire coming in and Telco recently turned it on)? Assuming, which is almost certain, that is the case...

It sounds like the hangup signal is not reaching the phone, in other words there is (possibly) a wiring short somewhere (within a phone or not) that is causing the adapter to think that the phone is off-hook when it's not.

You may have a telephone that is having trouble going on-hook (hanging up) and is trying to keep the circuit open. Unplug all but one telephone in their usual places, and try that one. Add or swap phones, one at a time, until you get the problem again.

Look at your wiring. Any been stepped on heavily lately? Any loose connectors sitting in salt water (grin)? Anything that could cause a partial short circuit between two of the wires?

Also, think about "odd" devices like modems, FAXes, switchers, autodialers, answering machines, etc. Got any stuff like that hooked up? Check it out. One gentleman here had problems with Caller ID until he discovered that unplugging a never-used old modem fixed it. His Caller ID worked until Vonage loaded a new firmware version, but for him it was easier to eliminate the problem (modem) rather than have Vonage figure out a way to compensate for it like they did before the firmware upgrade.

If all else fails, call CS. Vonage was "kind" enough to load new firmware a few weeks ago that helped a lot of people and hurt others. It's possible (possible, mind you) that your wiring was working because the old firmware was compesating for some problem that the new firmware can't.

I won't opine as to whether they should continue to compensate. Obviously, if they found a way to make it work before, they can probably do so again, but the Law of Unintended Consequences also applies. They might have, for example, solved a problem by lowering or raising a voltage level that now causes your wires to short more easily, or some of your older equipment just can't handle the "upgrade".

But check your gear first. You may have had a phone fail. You may have a wiring fault. Or Vonage might have screwed you up, or can no longer compensate for a problem you've had all along.
