Remember that a cable modem is on a shared network with other modems in your neighborhood or area. There will be a lot of traffic going on with your external, virtual "LAN" that is not related to your modem. The Linksys devices blink when they see network traffic.

Someone on a DSL connection has more of a dedicated or private connection back to a router at the phone company so you only see your own traffic and thus less Linksys light blinking. I'm going to assume that otaku is either on DSL or a cable network without many subscribers.

My cable connection looks pretty dead in the daytime but gets real active when kids get out of school in the afternoon. Mind you, the bandwidth is so massive that I don't see slow-downs, just more activity.
