Subject: Re: Is there such a thing as a "Canadian" Voip?
From: Marc Bissonnette <dragnet@internalysis.com>

Personally, if I were in the market for Voip, I'd certainly give a
smaller, Canadian company a chance with the service, while keeping a
landline as a backup. Many of the smaller ISPs in Canada are run by some
pretty (heck: exceptionally) bright people and to them, setting up some
quality Voip services would be child's play. As always, though, when
trying a newer technology, keep a reliable backup for a while, though.

I will say this, however, whether you're using a small company or a large
one and I'm speaking as a firefighter/emergency services worker, rather
than an IT guy: If you've got small children, elderly people or medically
fragile people in your home, ALWAYS, ALWAYS keep a landline as a backup
for 911 services ***EVEN IF YOUR Voip PROVIDER SERVES 911***

I can give you a solid example, though it's not Voip related: Last
winter, we (Whitewater Fire Department) were called to a chimney fire.
Now, normally a chimney fire is not a big deal, if it's called in right
away. Most of the time, we'll get it out with zero or close to zero
damage (Maybe the rain cap will need to be replaced if it was removed in
a hurry or it was exposed to open flame for too long)

Anyway, we got to a chimney fire that had been burning for an hour and a
half - the fire spread from the chimney into the walls and rafters and
ended up causing thousands and thousands of dollars in damage to the
home. When we asked the homeowner why she hadn't called it in as soon as
she saw smoke, she said she'd tried, but couldn't get service: She'd
replaced her land line with a cell phone to save money. Unfortunately,
for whatever reason, her reception sucked that night and ended up having
to drive a mile and a half to a neighbour's (the closest that was home)
to call 911. It took her longer because she needed to get her 9 month
old, her 4 year old and her 8 year old dressed and ready to go out.

All that damage, not to mention the risk to life and limb, because she
didn't want to keep a basic $30 landline as an emergency backup :(
