Vonage QOS stands for Quality of Service. Essentially, the router manages the bandwidth

QOS stands for Quality of Service. Essentially, the router manages the bandwidth and prioritize which packets (i.e. web surfing, ftp downloads and, most importantly for this forum, Voip packets) get sent and received.

Generally, enabling QOS is a good thing when using Voip as it ensures (or at least tries to ensure) that your voice data gets priority over all the other traffic on your network such that you don't get choppiness and other quality issues when other services (like web surfing, etc.) use your network. For example, if you have 3 computers on your network and all of them are using the 'Net (particularly uploading things on peer-to-peer networks like Kazaa and Bittorrent), QOS makes sure that your phone conversation receives all the bandwidth need to maintain quality of service (hence the name).

The trick with QOS is configuring it properly. For Voip, the more important traffic to manage is upload as Vonage, at the highest quality setting. requires 90kbps of upload bandwidth. Depending on your ISP, you may only have 256kbps of upload bandwidth and this can get used up pretty quickly if you are simultaneously using Voip and uploading things.

I use the WRT54G. I presume you aren't using the Vonage supplied routers as I think they come preconfigured with the correct QOS setting.

I don't use the standard Linksys firmware as the sveasoft firmware for the WRT54G is superior to the stock Linksys firmware (including QOS). Thus, I don't remember exactly how the Linksys router should be configured using the stock firmware. Generally, however, you should set the upload bandwidth at 80-90% of your actual (not advertsied) upload bandwidth and then specify that the Voip adapter to get the highest priority available. You identify the Voip adapter to the router either with its MAC ID or IP address.

To find your actual upload bandwidth, you should disable QOS and run a bunch of speed tests (like the Voip Speed Test on this site, the speedtests on dslreports.com, uploading a file to the storage space at your ISP via FTP) and come up with an average for your real world upload. Then set the QOS to 80-90% of this number.

Edit to correct the erroneous use of K (damn fingers).

What is QOS and should it be enable?

I am new to this router thing and wanted to know what QOS is and if it should be enable.
I also have a question about QoS, It is enabled on my linksys router and set at 256k,
90? you are joking right Roadrunner is limited to 40kb here for uploading vonage
gah, I thought this was going to happen. in your case randall, you have 384kilobits
reebok I love you man!! :P Really thanks for all your help.
Leaving QOS at 512kbps when you only have 384 kbps probably means that QOS will
Ok I change it to 384. Thanks for the help :)
Haj, I've got a 54g too with Sveasoft's Alchemy firmware.... I just wanted
