Purchased Vonage on April 8th 2006 and have not looked back since. Haven't had any problems during the past 2 months at all, except for some echo problems which were caused by myself (torrents that I forgot to kill on the way to work :oops:) . So after porting my number about 2 weeks after getting the router in the mail, I decided to schedule a test 911 call. We have 2 diabetics living here so it was of utmost importance that 911 go off without a hitch. I had read a couple of horror stories on other forum sites, so naturally, I was a bit concerned.
It should be noted that I work for another Voip in the US that does not have service in Canada, so I know all about the limitations of 911 service.
First off, I called my local police station and was transferred to the 911 dispatch centre where I notified the location that I was using Vonage and wished to test the 911 service. They gave me the go-ahead and this is what happened after I hung up and dialed 9-1-1:
Vonage Emergency Operator: (after about 15 seconds) "Vonage 911, is this the account holder"
ME: "Yes this is a test call, I just subscribed and I am placing a test"
Vonage Emergency Operator: "Is your phone number 613-xxx-xxxx, and your address ______?"
ME: "Yes"
Vonage Emergency Operator: "Please stay on the line I will connect you"
**Silence for approximately 30 seconds**
Unknown Dispatcher: "911 do you need police, fire, or ambulance"
Vonage Emergency Operator: "I have a Vonage customer on the line making a test call, could you please connect me to the emergency dispatch in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada"
Unknown Dispatcher: "Thank you, please hold the line"
**Silence for approximately 10 seconds**
Ottawa Dispatch: "911"
Vonage Emergency Operator: "I have a Vonage Voice over I.P. customer on the line making a test call, go ahead caller"
Me: "Is this the 911 call centre in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada?"
Ottawa Dispatch: "Yes it is"
So there you have it. It does take a little longer using Vonage to contact your local emergency dispatch considering seconds can count, but I think it should be fine. The entire call from when I hit 911 to when I spoke with Ottawa dispatch was approximately 1 minute and 20 seconds. Hopefully Vonage can get some sort of Enhanced 911 service going in the near future, but until then I am a happy camper.
I am in the Ottawa area using Rogers Highspeed cable and the Linksys RTP 300 (I believe) lol.
