Vonage PoppaJohn, okay to make sure that we don't miss anything, let's start from

PoppaJohn,

okay to make sure that we don't miss anything, let's start from scratch without the setup CD.

You said that you hit the reset button in the back on the new rt, correct?

Turn everything off.

You said in 2 posts ago that when you connected directly to the cable modem, you had an error? You mean you couldn't access the internet when directly connected to modem? Can you verify that. When directly connected to the SB4100 can you access the internet. Run a config/all on your computer and double check to make sure the ip address does not begin with 192.168.15.xxx. Also write down the Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection-Physical Address - It should be a twelve character mixture of numbers and letters each pair separated by a dash (-). Record that.

Until you get the computer to work with the modem alone, everything is moot.

Please get back to me when the computer can get internet access from setup SB4100 -> computer NIC.

Once you get access to the internet when directly connected to the internet, then power everything down and now connect your rt31p2 into the mix.

First let's make sure the cables are all in the right places.

SB4100 -> RT31P2 -> computer NIC

1. Ethernet cable from SB4100 -> RT31P2 "Internet" port which is on the back right side if looking at the front of the rt.
2. 2nd Ethernet cable from RT31P2 port 1 to the computer NIC
3. Power up the SB4100 and wait until all 3 lights are solid (receive, send, online).
4. Power up the RT31P2 wait until its finishes booting up.
5. Power up the computer.

Run ipconfig/all

Does the computer ip address begins with 192.168.15.xxx?
Also double check to make sure the physical address for ethernet adapter (local area connection) is the same as your previously written address. This is the mac address of your computer NIC.

Now, if the computer ip address begins with 192.168.15.xxx then your computer is getting the ip address from the RT31P2.

Okay, now let's get to the admin page of the RT31P2 by going to 192.168.15.1 on IE.

Go the setup tab and select "basic setup". Double check to see if you have "Obtain an IP automatically" in your drop down box. (BTW, does your ISP require you to obtain IP automatically?). Some have static IPs. Don't know. you might want to double check with your ISP.

Anyway, I'm assuming that it's like Comcast HSI in the chicago area which does not assign static ip addresses.

Next scroll down and double check ip address is 192.168.15.1

Then scroll down and make sure "Local DHCP Server" is enabled.

What is the start IP address? Is it 192.168.15.100? If so, does your computer have that ip or some sequential number like 192.168.15.101, etc?

If any of these settings is not originally there, then you need to save before we go to the next page.

Then close your IE and open it again and type in the url again and double check that the save actually took place. Sometimes I had to save multiple times before the change took place.

Now go to MAC Address Clone; It's 2 links to the right from the basic setup link (DDNS is in between).

Make sure that MAC Clone Service is enabled. Then double check that the MAC address in the next line is identical in everyway to the one you wrote down from your ipconfig/all.

Please get back to me on all the steps.

This is the only way to make sure that the RT is either misconfigured or just plain defective. At this point neither situation is ruled out.

Waiting for your post, Mundy5.

When you say did it, are you just following the 1-4 steps? Did you go to the admin
I did EXACTLY as you said. BTW it was also what the basic techs told me to do,
