Please bear with me as this is a long post, but after reading horror story after horror story (some of which I have experienced myself) I thought I should share.

We have had Vonage for about a month now. We ran into a few small snags at the beginning of our membership (a second line that we never asked for, some small tech issues). After going through the standard outsourced customer service hassles: long hold times, unintelligible CS reps, frustration all the way around, I ended up calling the executive response number. I left a message informing them that I'd like to cancel the second number that we never ordered. About 45 minutes later they actually called back. The young woman I spoke with was very professional, very friendly and (best of all) spoke English as a first language! She informed me that, since the account was in my girlfriend's name, I was not able to give the order to cancel the second line. I explained to her that we got the second line when someone from the India office called a day after we signed up. I was unable to understand much of what he said, but I could make out "special offer" "second line" etc etc. He finished with his script and I said "Uh... ok... thanks." and hung up. At no point did I ever say "yes, please sign me up" or "I would like a second line", yet there it was, line #2 on my dashboard. I asked the young woman from the executive response team why, if the second line was added after a discussion with me, it couldn't be terminated after a discussion with me. The second line was then removed from our account.

I then asked her what the status was with our telephone number transfer, which, the man who initially signed us up, said would take about 20 days. She checked her computer and said that there was no number transfer order on our account. What's worse, she said that our phone number wasn't able to transfer over to Vonage. I thanked her for her time and told her that my girlfriend would probably decide to cancel the service since since we couldn't keep our current number, and we would be in touch in a day or two to let her know. My girlfriend, while upset that we couldn't keep our number, decided it was worth the money to keep the service... but she wanted to try it for a few more days before making a final decision. Every day since then the same young woman from the executive response team called us to see where we stand and to ask if we had any more questions. As of today we decided to keep the service. I called her to inform her of our decision, and she, without any prompting from me, said she would credit us for another free month due to all the confusion about the phone number and second line.

There is no doubt in my mind that, had I tried the traditional customer service number, I would have become extremely frustrated and canceled the service weeks ago. Due to the outstanding service at the executive response number, Vonage has a customer who is extremely happy, and is now willing to work through whatever technical issues I have on my end to make the service work as efficiently as possible.

Long story short: If you have a problem, call the executive response team. While on the phone with these people, be as calm and friendly as possible, and your problem will be much easier to solve.
