Vonage People have tried to use vonage under wireless internet access conditions. However,

People have tried to use Vonage under wireless internet access conditions. However, there are some issues that must be resolved.

1. Wireless access points work in tandem with the number of users using it. If there are 10 people using it, then it reduces the amount of bandwidth each user gets (i.e. take the mbps / # of users.) So if the wireless access point can handle the standard 11 mbps, then each user will get 1.1 mbps. Which is not bad but most cable or dsl ISPs do not offer that kind of download or upload speeds. So as a result, it will greatly reduce your bandwidth that is available to you at any given time.

2. Also depending on the configuration, it might also affect the call quality and delay you might experience.

3. Also, since you don't control which computer or devices gets high priority, chances are your Vonage phone calls will be treated like any other computer trying to access the internet.

4. The most difficult problem is the ability to connect your Vonage adapter to it. Most of them need a wired connection which means that you will need to use your laptop to be an intermediary and connect the Vonage router to your laptop ethernet plug.

Do a search on this forum (upper left side "search" menu item) and look up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) and if you enable that on your laptop, you should be able to use your phone.

This type of setup has been utilized by many who travel alot and have only wireless connections in their rooms. I haven't tried this myself so I cannot speak about its details.

Of course, the WIFI phone would be another option though if cost is an issue, then the ICS method would be preferred since it requires no cost on your part (assuming you get the adapter from Vonage directly).

The reason why some have suggested using a wireless adapter is b/c there needs to be a way for you to convert the wireless signal back to a wired signal in order to use your Vonage adapter.

If you do the ICS method, your laptop or if you prefer, your desktop does that for you. However, the big downside is that the computer must be always on if you want to get phone calls and make calls etc.

Hope this helps.
