Part of the problem is that USB is a shared bus standard. That is, everyone on the USB bus shares the exact same bandwidth. USB 1.1 only supports up to 12Mb/s transfer rate, although USB 2.0 supports up to 480Mb/s. Still, if something on the bus is sending or receiving data, the other devices have to wait their turn.

This is obviously not exactly a good thing when it comes to your network connection and Vonage both using exactly the same USB bus at the exact same time. Both will be sending and receiving packets at the same time (as you want to use them at the same time), which could be causing some of your problems.

Unfortunately, contention issues such as this won't show up when you test your Voip via one of the online test sites, as these use software to simulate the audio input and output, and don't actually throw any audio data across the bus.

There are a few ways you can test to see if USB bus contention is a problem. One would be to get yourself a PCI USB 2.0 adapter card, with its own USB processing. Use onee of your V-Phone or modem from the built-in USB, and the other from the card, and see if this improves the situation. Or, if you have a second machine available, try it with the V-Phone on one machine and the modem on the other, with a network connection between the two (and proper routing in place), and see if that helps clear things up.

Your Voip test scores look pretty good. You could still be having routing difficulties or delays between yourself and Vonage, but my gut feeling is that you have USB bus contention issues that need to be addressed first.

(Of course, getting yourself a proper ethernet modem would be a good fix as well :) ).
