Vonage Packet8 happened into the VoIP service provider business after finding few takers

Packet8 happened into the Voip service provider business after finding few takers for it's Voip MTA device.

Vonage in contrast was started as a Voip service provider and well funded by private funds and continued to receive funding from private equity firms as well.

The typical acquisition cost of a Voip subscriber is $400 - thus to get 100,000 subscribers - you'd better have $40m in cash in your wallet. These acquisitions include the investment in the MTA and marketing costs to acquire you the customer.

Many are anticipating the hey day of the long distance carriers, where many smaller operators 'found' nice revenues simply by offering a lower price. Customers simply 'picked' a new LD operator with no interruption of service.

As many of you have posted, porting numbers to Vonage is NOT something that takes a few hours, it's in terms of weeks. If you're carrier goes AOL or worse SOL - it could take you weeks to re-start another Voip offering or simply days to re-start traditional service from your traditional telephone company.

Vonage, as a private company, has no obligation to post their financial condition. While I don't imagine any immediate problem - they could go belly up with almost no warning. Simply the service stops working and they stop answering their phones.
