Okay…success! First of all, I have to compliment the telephone support I received. I’ve read many “horror” stories on these forums (and others) about being placed on hold for 45 minutes only to be placed on hold again. My call was answered immediately.
The first tech I spoke with had me change the configuration. I don’t remember exactly what we did, but I know we removed the “jumper” that was running from the Internet port on the phone adapter to Port 3 on the phone adapter. None of what he suggested worked so I was transferred to “advanced” level one support. There was no wait on hold. The transfer was more or less immediate.
The advanced tech once again had me change the configuration. This is what we ended up with, which seems much simpler than anything that I’d read thus far:
(1) Connect the cable modem (Toshiba in my case) to the “Internet” port of the RT31PT. (2) Connect the WAN port on the Belkin to the #1 LAN port on the RT31PT. (3) Connect the #2 LAN port on the Belkin (it just happened to be on #2…this wasn’t a requirement) to the desktop PC. That’s it!
It’s only been a few minutes, but so, far so good.
