If you could, millions of people would be getting Vonage phone adapters and connecting via their neighbors' open WiFi networks.

You need to have a broadband modem. But the modem is actually somewhere else in the building. Someplace where there is also a wireless router (probably multiple routers in the building).

You're probably going to have to get a dedicated broadband line for your apartment so you can take advantage of Vonage.
