Vonage OK, here's the difference in your setups. When you're at home, you get internet

OK, here's the difference in your setups. When you're at home, you get internet service from somewhere (?) via your wall jack. The router gets that via the blue cable plugged into its WAN port and it provides service to the laptop via the connection from its LAN port to the ethernet port on the laptop (yellow cable). The laptop apparently also has wireless capability that you're not using in this setup. If its configured properly, you could unplug the yellow cable and still get service to the laptop via the router's wireless function.

On the road, the laptop gets service from the hotels wireless service via its wireless network card. The router cannot get service this way- it's a wireless provider, not a user. (It may be possible to make it work that way using 3rd party firmware, but I'm not enough of a network person to comment.) What you want is to get the laptop to provide service to the router in this situation by bridging the service that it gets from its wireless card to its wired ethernet card. XP needs to be set up to do this. In that situation, you would run the cable from the laptop ethernet port to the router WAN (blue) port.

Having said all that, if you are actually getting indications of a live internet connection with the setup that you've been trying on the road, try simply running a cable from the router WAN (blue) port to one of its LAN (yellow) ports. That may get you a phone light, and I wouldn't argue with success. (XP bridging may already be set up.) Simply moving the cable that you now have plugged into the LAN port over to the WAN port might also work. One rule of thumb- if nothing is plugged into the WRT54G's WAN port, then you won't get phone service.
