OK - after reading these columns for a while I have a solution for relative newbies
(1) Plug an ethernet cable to the 'PC' port of the vt1005 unit, NOT the WAN port.
(2) Either (a) Plug the other end of this cable either to a router/switch, and plug your PC into the same switch or (b) directly to the PC that you are trying to use to configure the vt1005 (only if you are using a crossover cable - if you don't know what this is, you don't have one)
(3) make sure that your PC is either using DHCP to get an IP address (the vt1005 will give it one - it seems to have a DHCP server built in), or has a static address that can see 192.168.102.1,
(4) Make sure that your switch/router isn't trying to be the DHCP server at the same time, or at least has a subnet mask big enough to let you see 192.168.102.1. On the later Linksys models, the subnet mask is set by a dropdown. If your router's LAN IP address is 192.168.1.1 or something, you can set the subnet mask to 255.255.128.0 and that should be close enough.
(4) in a browser type in http://192.168.102.1 - should bring up the admin screen
A lot of people have said that the vt1005's address is 192.168.102.1, but this is only true if you are plugged into the 'PC' port, which seems to have its own DHCP server built in.
