OK, I'll try to clarify...

I started a new line of service, at a new house (as in new construction) on July 23rd, 2007. It's a land line with Verizon. Not that it matters, but the only reason I got the land line was for my security system which was installed a week later. However, when the tech for my security system, he hooked up my security system to a cell based transmitter, and said I could use Vonage as a secondary method to contact them. No need to have a land line.

Well, as soon as I heard those sweet words, I wanted to port my number from Verizon over to Vonage.

Vonage website says "presently can't transfer this number". So I called, got routed around a few times, but basically was told the number was too new to be ported over.

So I called Verizon and they said that it usually takes a billing cycle before you can port the number. It was explained to me by Verizon that no one was aware of the number since it was new, and that it would eventually be able to be ported.

So my ultimate questions is, how long from the time you have new service installed with Verizon (or any telco for that matter) until a number is portable? I'd like to keep my number, but it's not a huge requirement.

A couple follow up questions, is the Voange website the most up to date way to check? Or will calling provide me a more up to date status to see if my number is portable.
