Vonage OK, I found something interesting on my WRTP54G (1.00.60) today, and maybe a telco

OK, I found something interesting on my WRTP54G (1.00.60) today, and maybe a telco expert can chime in and let me know how my results are wrong.

I've read, consistently, on several telco sites where people seem to know what they are talking about, that the RED wire in the Green/Red pair is the "Ring" or NEGATIVE polarity wire, and the GREEN wire is the "Tip" or POSITIVE polarity wire.

So, being a curious fellow, I took a piece of standard, decent-quality 4-wire telephone wire, chopped it in half, and stripped the red and green wires a bit.

I plugged the RJ11 end into my WRTP54G and put my trusty old Fluke-77 on it (red probe to green telco wire, black probe to red telco wire) and I get approximately -48V (negative 48 volts) DC.

Reversing the probes (red-red, black-green) gives me around +48VDC.

To verify that my test wire is correct... When I look at this piece of wire, with the clip side down (contacts up) and the wire end pointing toward me (plug pointing away), the colors are Black, Red, Green, Yellow in Left-to-Right order.

I have noticed that some of my 2-wire patch cables (one of which I happen to have plugged into my AT&T speakerphone) reverse the polarity of the signal, while most of my 4-wire patch cables do not. My speakerphone doesn't seem to care about polarity, but I have heard some devices do.

So, for anyone who knows, 100% for sure, what the polarity is, and where my testing might be wrong, please post back and tell me my research is bad.

Because if I'm right, then the type of patch cable used can have a profound effect on devices like modems, FAX machines, etc, which I understand have a lot more sensitivity to reversed polarity than your typical phone, and a lot of people's problems with modem-type communications gear may be solved by selecting a patch cable that reverses the polarity of the red and green pair.

Does anyone know if the wire included with the WRTP54G is a polarity-reversing one? I have gobs of patch cables around here and no clue which one came with my WRTP54G.

If it's not causing you any problems, just let it be. There's millions of people
my RT31P2 is reversed too. i just made a cross-over cable to flip it for my house-wiring
You are correct sir! I just threw my Fluke on the punchdown block and sure enough,
I honestly didn't read the post for very long, but are you saying the vonage devices
John- Basically, yes. Nate- I can confirm what you're saying. I'm 99.5% sure
Actually, since I've been using a crossover cable all along (without being conscious
i just wanted to alert you that it is reversed on the rt31p2 also, so you could ask
Actually that quote is from VonageTPA. I'm glad you posted that information.
Will do 'though I'm not sure where they stand on doing updates for the Sipura chipset
