The currently available consumer geosynchronous satellite internet services (e.g., HughesNet/DirecPC) do not work well with Voip because the satellite caches uploaded data packets and periodically burst transmits them in the most cost efficient manner, not a time efficient manner.
Unfortunately, I don’t think any of the consumer satellite internet services are working on offering a service which prioritizes those customers transmitting voice.
This is much more of an issue than raw “up” bandwidth or the 26k mile round trip.
Thus, your voice packets are waiting 26,000 miles in space for various periods of time until the satellite “gets around” to sending them. This results in both delay and "jitter" even if the bandwidth is OK.
Low earth satellite voice service (INMARSAT, Iridium) work fine because they were designed for voice and don’t cache in the same way (and are also a lot closer, too). But who wants to pay around ten bucks a minute?
Voice can be made to work with geosynchronous satellite internet, but:
- Voice prioritized
- The buffer time in the voice service (not the satellite) needs to be much higher, which results in
- A noticeable delay
I was in South Asia and was able to communicate using 2 geosynchronous satellites:
DSN** phone to ground station in ____stan > satellite > ground station in southwest Asia > second satellite > US ground station > DSN > PSTN > US phone.
You could hear OK, but the delay was so long you had to say “over” every time you had finished a sentence and wanted the other party to reply….
