Not much to add after Steve's reply but I would just like to touch on the QOS a little more. An advantage to putting the Vportal first is that it automatically gives QOS priority to your Vonage phone calls. So even if you were doing the other things that you mention, your calls should remain clear. Again, like Steve said, it could adversely affect your gaming or bit torrent etc. I don't think you mentioned the router you have now. If it is a pretty robust and fairly new router, it should have QOS settings that you can set up manually and like Steve mentioned, you should set it to favor the Vonage box.
You can also buy a "broadband booster" ,which when placed directly after the modem, automatically provides packet prioritization. There is one from Hawking called the BB1 and Dlink also makes one but I don't remember the model. Something to consider if you want your router to remain first and it doesn't have QOS settings.
