No offense, but monitoring with one of the "name brand" alarm comanies is about the most expensive way to go about it.

Most alarm systems are made by a company called ADEMCO. I have two (one for home, and one for the office) that were installed by Rollins Security (now part of Ameritech).

I purchased the equipment, which cost a few bucks, but after 10 years, the stuff still works great. Many newer upscale homes and townhouses have ADEMCO stuff built right in. It is solid equipment!

I swiched from Rollins when they were bought by Ameritech quite a few years back and they jacked up the monthly monitoring fee.

After making a few calls, I found a local company (the dorkily named "Police Patrol Security") that agreed to do monitoring for $52 - per QUARTER (that's about $17 per month). This was about 1/3 of what the big boys were charging. I've been with them for almost 10 years now. Good folks.

If you buy your equipment from a "name" alarm company, they may use a proprietary version of the motherboard (but probably still ADEMCO equipment) that may be difficult or impossible to reprogram. All the more reason NOT to go with the big boys. If you are leasing the equipment (and paying over $100 a month for the service) shame on you. That's money down the toilet. The alarm system itself is not that expensive.

(NOTE: Many of these "leased" systems are often left in place after the customer disconnects. I had an investment property with a Brinks system left in it by the previous owner. They never came back for it!).

Even with proprietary motherboards and alarm systems, 3rd party providers can monitor your system. They do have small boxes with RJ-11 connectors than intercept the alarm calls and re-rout them to a new call center - all for a lot less than what you are paying per month.

MOST IMPORTANT: If you have an alarm system, make sure that you have smoke detectors as part of the system. This is the most valuable feature of any alarm. You are far more likely to have a fire problem than a break-in problem, and a fire problem will be far more costly. An early response from the fire department can save your house or your life! You'd be suprised how many alarm systems are sold without fire protection. Many "basic" systems sold (leased) by Brinks et al. give you a couple of door switches and a motion sensor, and that's it.

The alarm business has a pretty shady past. A lot of the people in the business are or were former criminals. One technique to sell alarms has been to break into someone's house and then come back the next day to sell an alarm. Also, alarm salesmen going door to door have been known to "case" a house, tell a friendly thief about the place, and then go back after the buglary to clinch the sale. Be forewarned about "free security evaluations" from alarm companies! It ain't coincidence if your house gets broken into at about the same time.....
