Most of the Linksys routers tend to use a very long timeout for idle sessions. That timeout is on the order of 5 days. The connections table they use is relatively small, on the order of 2,000 connections.
So, if you make and do not cleanly break more than 2,000 connections in a 5-day period, those connections will remain in the table, the table will fill up, and the router will refuse to create any new connections until you have freed up a spot in the table by disconnecting an old connection, or until that old connection is allowed to timeout (5 days since last use).
These connections are listed as "active" but are not considered "idle" until 5 full days after the last bit of data was transmitted across them.
Since P2P software is continuously making new connections and not cleanly breaking them, that iptable can fill up darned fast.
Some routers use larger tables, some use faster timeouts, and others (like the older Linux based Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL series) open sourced their firmware so enthusiasts could change the settings to their own preferences. Personally, I have the standard 2,048 connections, but my active connections are set to become idle after four hours, not five days.
I don't know what the WRT54GC is based on, but it is designed to be compact, not high-capacity. In your place, I would be looking into a WRT54GL, which is a Linux based Linksys router, and I'd immediately load HyperWRT Tofu (aftermarket firmware) on it.

My WRT54GL w/Tofu has supported P2P, Vonage, multiple VPN connections, and all manner of junk with working QoS on my 256k upload connection, with nary a problem, since October. I'm sure other routers will, to, of course. I don't know if the "GC" is one of them.
