Years ago lines were laid. Lines have been upgraded over and over. Now many lines laid are useless since they're obsolete.
Enter the digital world! fiber optics. Not that new.
Over the last 10 years, cables have been laid - but this time they're FIBER.
Who laid them? Phone companies, telecommunications companies, cable companies.
Enter Satellite transmissions. Enter HOME sat users. Enter Auto-sat users. Enter 2.4GHz users - aka Microwave transmissions.
Regular phones like Pacific Bell, Bell South, South Western Bell etc, their calls take the same route as a Voip call. One main difference:
Voip , your PHONE is analog, the ATA converts that signal to DIGITAL.
travels via fiber optics, just like your cable signal, regular phone etc.
Voip: buy a Voip phone and it will NOT have to convert analog to digital. It will be digital.
the Voip companies are using intenet lines laid by others.
Even tha banks use IP transmissions (though VPN type and encrypted)
your cell phone has an IP address!
your cable company uses fiber to transmit data.
So..as someone else stated: Voip is cheaper since they don't have to pay to lay lines. Why do some charge more? Like TimeWarner?
Simple: RIPOFF - translated to PROFIT.
The CEO couldn't make over $100million a year if he didn't bilk his customers!
Vonage seems to be run by REAL world people. "Let's make a profit from sheer quantity" not try to get rich from one single person like Verizon and Time Warner etc.
My opinions reflect just that: MY OPINIONS
I value no service over another and reserve the right to lie, cheat or use other forms of persuasion to get you to see things my way.
