Just what the title asks; How come cordless phones don't have the range they used to?

At home its not a big issue, but at work I need one that can at least make it to the lunchroom. I had an old Panasonic 2.4 ghz phone with dual antennas on the base, however the handset took a rather nasty spill down the stairs and requires the use of tape to hold the battery in. So I ordered a Uniden 5.8 ghz phone with all these claims of being "The most powerful cordless phones" and I cant make it to the lunchroom with it. I figured it had to be defective so I had it replaced with the same results. So I decided to use it at home and bring my own phone in, a new Panasonic 2.4 ghz. Upon testing that phone, it also has a short range as well. I can barely even walk across the street with it. So I dug up an old old Vtech 900mhz connected it to my Vonage box and viola, works clear down the street. Long story short, the new cordless phones have a much shorter range than they used to 3 or 4 years ago. What gives?

Any phone suggestions from you guys?
