Just to clear this up, REN stands for Ringer Equivalence Number. Back in the day (rotary) the phone companies could only supply enough voltage/current to your house to ring so many phones. They would let you know (if you asked) what the REN was (I think it was equal to 5? (this may not be a true statement in your area today, Mine now is a REN of 20)) so if you look on the bottom of your phoneline devices it lists the REN. For instance I have two phones, two caller ID devices and an answering machine: Phone 1: 1.80 Phone 2: 0.8 CID 1: 0.0 CID 2: 0.0 Answering machine: 0.0 So my REN equals 2.60 If my phone company gives me a REN of 5 then I am safe and can add more devices to my line. Equally, if my Linksys RT31P2 can handle a REN of 5 I can also add more devices. The BIG question I have and many others do to is, what is the REN of the Linksys RT31P2? (and other broadband phone adapters?)
