Vonage Just to clarify one point. Someone appears to be abusing your telephone number.

Just to clarify one point. Someone appears to be abusing your telephone number. They are very likely not abusing your Vonage account.

Caller ID information is not all that hard to fake, if you have access to a phone trunk that can send it. Fortunately, most people are not in a position where they have that sort of access, so Caller ID abuse isn't rampant. I've worked for firms that have had their own phone trunks, and believe me when I tell you that:
(a) the data is VERY easy to fake, just plug whatever number you want in the caller ID field to be sent, and
(b) the companies that own these phone switches also deeply value the trust they have with their telecom providers, and wouldn't willingly allow such shenanigans to take place (but some abuse does happen).

I strongly suspect that is what is happening here. Someone, somewhere, is making calls using your phone number as their Caller ID. If your number had been reassigned by your old telephone company, people would have trouble calling you (because calls would be routed to that number).

If that's the case, then Vonage can't stop it. The calls are not being made on a Vonage switch. Only the person who owns that phone switch can stop it. And you're going to have to file a police report to get the ball rolling in that investigation, because that's going to require a database search of all of the calls that have been made with a caller ID matching your phone number, and a traceback to the switch that originated each call.

Vonage doesn't even BEGIN to have that kind of data. And the person who receives your calls can't get at it, either. Their phone company can, though, but they aren't going to disclose that to you just because you want it.

The Department of Homeland Security has the data, but mere mortals like the police need warrants to get it. Getting a warrant starts with filing a police report.

Even if it is a case where your old telephone company has issued someone an outbound-only line and accidentally put your caller ID data on it, you need to find out where the calls are really coming from. Which still requires a warrant, which still starts with a police report.

So, if you suspect someone is abusing your phone number, you have two choices:

1. File a police report so the police can try to figure out who that someone is.

2. Change your number.
