It would not seem like a difficult thing to create a database with all of these addresses, and match the caller's phone number up with a name and address record. That way when someone calls 911, the name and address goes onto the screen.
There are times when you may not be able to speak. Or a child could place the call and not know for sure what their address is. I am surprised to read that there is not any cross-referencing being done. It can be very important to have that info readily available.
Like you, I will be keeping my police/fire/ambulance posted at my phone. It would certainly speed things up. You save 2 seconds calling 911 over calling an extra 4 digits, but how much time is wasted once you reach the 911 operator.
It is still an excellent idea to have the 911 functionality. It is not always me who is home here. A friend could be looking after my home, and it is nice to know that they can dial 911 and get someone when I'm not here.
A big thanks to Vonage for working on this. I am sure it will get better as time goes on and someone figures out a better and more accurate method for doing this.
